Pie Crust

My Grandma used to make the best pies...ever!  I really believe that a really good pie has to have home made pie crust.  It is just better and not that hard to do.  I have used this pie crust recipe a million times.  I have made dessert pies with this recipe and meat pot pies with this recipe as well. I just posted a great Turkey Pot Pie Recipe that I used this crust recipe for.  It is so easy.

Here is what you'll need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar ( i leave this out if the crust is not for a dessert)
  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
In a large bowl add the flour.  Cut the butter into small cubes and add the butter to the flour slowly.

With every cube of butter you add to the flour use a pastry knife and chop the butter.

This is a pastry knife. If you don't have one you could just use two knives in a criss cross fashion

Keep cutting the butter into the flour until you have no more butter.  Now add the salt.  Next add the ice water.  Make sure you do this slowly and mix thoroughly.  Once water is added using your hands mix and compound the dough into two separate balls.

Now place the ball of dough in between two pieces of wax paper.

(sorry for the dark picture...)

Now roll the dough with a rolling pin until the dough is a little larger than the pie pan you plan to use.

Next grease the pie pan with butter or spray Pam.  Add the crust to the pan.

Now trim the edges off with a knife.

There you have the bottom crust.  You can now add the filling to the pie...whatever it may be...cherry filling, apple filling or the chicken or Turkey Pot Pie filling.

See My:

Once filled place the other rolled pie crust on top and pinch the edges, and poke little holes with a fork or knife to allow the steam to escape.

Moisten the edges with water and bake according to recipe.
